Stepping Into Your Power: Being Authentically You

In my nearly three decades of working with clients as a psychic advisor, I've seen a lot of people grapple with the notion of stepping into their power. It's a phrase that gets tossed around a lot, often without much substance behind it. But what does it really mean to step into your power without morphing into someone you're not? I want to talk about that from what I've seen in real life, not from some abstract theory.

Let's start by addressing a common misconception. There's a belief that to become powerful, we need to model ourselves after someone else who seems 'powerful'. Maybe it's a public figure or even a mentor. However, in my experience, true power comes from embracing and amplifying your own essence, not adopting the traits of another person. I've worked with people who felt disempowered because they were trying to imitate someone else's way of being, only to find themselves more diminished and insecure.

I remember working with a woman many years ago who wanted to be seen as assertive and dynamic. She admired a colleague at her workplace who was all these things, at least on the surface. In trying to mimic this colleague, she ended up feeling like a fraud. When we talked, it became clear that being outspoken and headstrong wasn't in alignment with her quiet, contemplative nature. Sometimes, the power is in the subtleties and the whisper, not the shout. It took some time, but she discovered her own form of leadership that was authentic to her, and she flourished in a way that her colleague never did.

Finding Your Unique Power

What I often see is the need to unlearn narratives that tell us our natural state isn't good enough. It's crucial to recognize that you are the best at being you. Take the energy of that essence and elevate it, rather than force fitting into a mold that never quite feels comfortable. This can be liberating, but it's not always easy. Cultural and familial pressures exert a strong influence, and unwriting these scripts takes time and intention.

I worked with a man who felt his gentleness in a business world valued for 'killer instincts' was a liability. In reality, his strength lay in his empathy and his ability to connect with people on a deeper level. By leaning into this, rather than shunning it, his career arc shifted dramatically. People opened up to him, deals sealed practically themselves, and he found that the power he wielded genuinely came from himself.

Holding Space for Growth

Another pattern I've noted is where people confuse power with perfection; that stepping into their power also means they have to have it all figured out. My sessions have revealed that real power involves embracing growth and sometimes, vulnerability. Some of the most empowered people I've worked with have been those who are not afraid to admit they don't have all the answers. They're willing to step forward, aware that failure and learning are part of the process. They hold themselves with a sense of grace that is transformative, which in turn, often encourages others to do the same.

Stepping into your power won't make you invincible or rid your life of challenges. Instead, it will provide a sense of inner steadiness and confidence that no outside storm can wrestle away. For those I've worked with who have managed to find this, there’s no need to become someone else. They find themselves more truly themselves yet also deeply connected to a strength they didn’t know they had. This, in my eyes, is what real empowerment is all about.

The best form of power supports and nurtures, rather than oppresses or constrains. It's about elevating your own understanding of who you are, and having the courage to express it, day in and day out.
