Recognizing How We Quietly Surrender Our Power

Over decades of client work, I've seen people unknowingly give their power away to outside opinions and impossible standards. Recognizing these patterns is the first step in reclaiming one's own life.

Over nearly 30 years of sitting with people from all walks of life, I've observed something that often goes unnoticed yet profoundly shapes how we live. People tend to give their power away silently, almost unseeingly, to forces and habits that don’t serve them. It’s a quiet transaction, and yet, it has significant impacts.

One pattern I've seen repeatedly is how people hand over their power to external validation. It's something I experienced as well when I began doing psychic work in the early days. Clients would walk in with the energy of seeking approval rather than clarity. They didn't realize they were placing the source of their worth in the hands of someone else's opinion, be it a partner, a parent, or even a boss. The question, "Am I good enough?" lingered unspoken in the room, demanding an answer from anyone but themselves.

The Illusion of Control Through Perfectionism

Another common avenue through which power slips away is through perfectionism. Many folks think rigidity and control equate to strength, but perfectionism is just a different form of giving away power. I've worked with many individuals who couldn’t let go of minor details, convinced that achieving flawlessness was the key to respect and admiration. But ironically, the pursuit of perfection gave control over to an impossible standard, which can never be fully achieved and only brings dissatisfaction.

Clients struggle with the belief that they must manage every detail to maintain control. It’s a cycle that rarely leads to peace because the real lesson often lies in letting go and recognizing the beauty in imperfection. I recall one woman who consistently chose to swallow her voice during team meetings under the belief she wasn't ready or qualified enough to contribute. Years spent bending to authority did nothing but erode her own belief in what she brought to the table.

Habits of Deferral

Deferring decision-making can drain personal power too. Many people, possibly even unknowingly, develop a habit of deferring to others when it comes to important decisions. This pattern often feels safer, but in reality, it prevents a person from stepping fully into their own life. I’ve encountered talented individuals who waited for a nod of approval before taking creative risks, delaying their own passion projects sometimes indefinitely. It saddened me when I saw how they trapped themselves under an invisible ceiling of doubt and uncertainty.

What many fail to grasp in the moment is that their intuition is a compass. A source of strength and wisdom ready at any time to give direction, if only given the chance to be heard.

I think of a client, a young artist, who was wary to exhibit her work. Fearing both failure and success, she left decisions to her partner, trusting that he knew best. Hours in sessions highlighted the vibrant picture she had of herself, a picture blurred by unnecessary glyphs of doubt. Once she reclaimed her autonomy, her art and life took unexpected, enriching turns.

Understanding these patterns doesn’t happen overnight. Recognizing them is the first step, usually followed by a series of small, often uncomfortable choices. Choices where power isn’t surrendered but reclaimed. It means discerning where you’ve given your authority away and deliberately calling it back, intentionally participating in your own life.

Life gently asks for genuine engagement and connection to our own truth, and sometimes the biggest step towards reclaiming one's power is simply pausing to question: "Whose voice have I been listening to at the cost of my own?"
