Over the years, I've met so many people who've had their instincts dismissed. It’s a struggle that's more common than you might think. When someone repeatedly tells you that what you’re sensing isn’t real or valid, it can be deeply confusing. I’ve worked with individuals whose partners, friends, or even family have been the ones to routinely undermine their inner knowing.

In one memorable case, a client kept returning to the same question: "Is my intuition wrong?" She spoke of a partner who frequently dismissed her gut feelings. He would roll his eyes, sometimes with a tone that suggested she was just being paranoid. Over time, she started second-guessing herself so much that any sense of internal authority eroded. This isn't an isolated story. It's a pattern I've seen play out again and again.

Recognizing the Undermining Patterns

The first step I’ve found in reclaiming authority is recognizing the patterns themselves. In sessions, I often ask clients to describe how they feel when dismissed. Is it anger, sadness, maybe a sense of being small? By putting words to these emotions, it becomes easier to see how their authority has been diminished. Often, it's not just about the one-off comments, but a repeated questioning of their reality.

In many cases, this sort of undermining isn't necessarily malicious. Sometimes people close to us genuinely don't see what we see. But that doesn’t make it any less damaging. Understanding this can be a powerful part of healing. It's okay to feel upset, and it's crucial to allow oneself to feel. Many times, I've noticed that clients begin to reconnect with themselves when given the space to acknowledge and feel these emotions fully.

Building Back Your Internal Confidence

I wish I could say there’s an easy fix, but it takes time and work. One method I encourage is journaling. Writing down those moments when your instincts proved accurate, even the small ones. It can serve as a reminder when doubt creeps in. More than once, I've seen clients gain small boosts of confidence through this exercise.

Creating a kind of self-check-in routine is another tool. Take a moment and ask yourself: "What am I feeling? Does it align with what I’ve observed or experienced before?" Reinforcing that connection with self-awareness can gradually restore a sense of trust in your instincts. I've seen clients create powerful shifts by simply giving themselves permission to trust their inner voice again.

While working with yet another individual, she found that naming her feelings and instincts out loud helped immensely. Whether alone or with a trusted friend, giving voice to your inner world can break the cycle of silence that disempowered instincts often enforce.

Of course, it's important to also respect the complexity. There are times when our instincts may require a second look, especially when emotions are high. But learning to distinguish between valid intuition and momentary emotion is part of reclaiming that internal authority.

Ultimately, each person's path to regaining trust in their instincts is unique. There’s no one-size-fits-all blueprint. The essence, in my view, lies in practicing patience with yourself, observing the patterns, and affirming your experiences. Rebuilding this trust isn’t about suddenly asserting authority but rather constructing a stable foundation of self-assurance.

With nearly three decades in this line of work, I see how a supportive environment can empower individuals to reclaim their voices. It is often the case that with patience, honesty, and practice, people can move past the doubts seeded by past dismissals. And in time, that sense of deep trust can emerge stronger than before, serving as a keystone for more aligned, fulfilling relationships with oneself and others.
