In nearly 30 years of sitting with clients, I have noticed a truth that isn't easy to hear. Often, the endings that feel crushing or even cruel might be exactly what our souls need. It can sound absurd at first. How could something so painful be necessary? Yet, I have witnessed it time and time again in real people's lives.

I once worked with a woman whose marriage unraveled abruptly after over a decade together. She felt blindsided by her husband's decision to leave. The loss was not just of her partner, but of the future she had built in her mind. She came to me seeking clarity, something that might help piece together the chaos she was mired in.

The Unseen Path

What I observed then, and have observed so often since, was how an ending can clear a path that we couldn't imagine while still enmeshed in the old. In her case, once the rawness began to subside, something powerful emerged. Freed from a commitment that no longer served her soul's growth, she began to explore long-neglected passions and deepen her spiritual practices. True, the road forward felt nebulous and intimidating, but the newfound space allowed her to become much more herself than she had ever been in the marriage.

I wish I could say there's always an obvious reason behind these dramatic shifts, but that's not true. The universe doesn’t always serve up neat explanations. What I've seen, though, is that these endings often initiate a personal renaissance, shaking us free from patterns or roles that no longer fit. It’s like a cosmic mandate that says, "It’s time to continue evolving." It's not about what we lose, but what we might gain. That reframe starts to appear as time creates distance from the immediate hurt.

The Courage to Release

There’s a courage in releasing, even when it’s not on our terms. I recall a client who was forced from a career that had become his entire identity. The impact was brutal. Years of dedication felt diminished overnight. What I learned from his situation was how endings demand a re-evaluation of who we think we are. They peel away a layer that, if we're honest, might have held stagnation underneath.

Eventually, he saw how his identity had been too tightly bound to external validation. In the absence of his job, he found a truer sense of self-worth more aligned with who he aspired to be. I remember his relief, once he stopped clinging to what went unfulfilled. His story remains a testament to how stripping away our illusions can reveal a more purposeful path.

All of this isn't to dismiss the deep grief or trauma these endings can unleash. They can be incredibly destabilizing, leaving us uncertain and unsure. But acknowledging that they might very well start something necessary does not minimize the experience itself. If anything, it underscores the resilience and wisdom our souls possess, often hidden until truly tested.

I don't mean to imply these bright sides appear immediately. It can take months or even years before the fog clears enough to see the shore. But what I've seen is that clients often look back and recognize that what felt like a collapse was, in reality, an invitation to dismantle what no longer serves and to rebuild larger and stronger than before.

Ultimately, devastating endings remind us that our sense of purpose cannot hinge entirely on what is tangible or familiar. Instead, they encourage us to delve deeper into our own essence, to untangle the knots and rediscover who we are at our core. And often, that rediscovery is the greatest gift we can allow ourselves.
