When the Timing Isn't What You Thought: Navigating Unseen Patterns

I’ve observed over many years that the timing of things rarely coincides with our expectations. Clients often have clear timelines but life continuously operates on its own agenda

After nearly thirty years of guiding people through all sorts of life situations, one pattern I’ve seen repeatedly is the timing of events rarely aligns with our expectations. Folks come to me with specific timelines in mind, eager for a career change by summer or hoping for love to appear by year's end. They're not just seeking insights, but a map with clearly marked days and dates. But, I’ll be honest: life's timing isn’t always a match for what's on that calendar hanging in the kitchen.

I recall a session years ago with a client who wanted to buy their dream home within six months. She had a meticulous plan, funds saved, a preferred neighborhood picked out, even a moving company ready to call. In our reading, I kept sensing an important delay. It wasn’t something she was thrilled to hear, but I felt a sense of certainty that things were in motion, just not on her timeline. Six months came and went, and nothing materialized. Nearly a year later, however, the perfect house came into her life, one she hadn't even initially considered but suited her better in every way. She was glad then for the delay, reluctantly accepting that her desired outcome arrived differently than she’d planned.

The friction between our plans and life's actual timing often leads to frustration, but I’ve come to recognize that this discord usually carries an opportunity for deeper learning. When a client feels stuck, caught in the waiting, I often ask them to consider what this moment is offering them. Often, the pause gives them space to develop resources, skills, or insights they didn't realize they needed. It challenges them to see the situation in a broader sense, beyond the immediate longing for an answer or a result.

The Influence of Experience and Readiness

One thing I've noticed is that readiness comes in layers. We might believe we're prepared for that promotion or new relationship. But life has a way of addressing unacknowledged needs. I remember a client who desperately wanted to transition into a new career field. They had done the courses, applied for several positions, yet faced persistent setbacks. Upon deeper exploration in our sessions, it turned out they were grappling with a lack of confidence in their ability to lead a team. Without realizing it, this inner struggle was influencing their job search. Once they addressed these feelings and honed their leadership qualities, opportunities started aligning. The timing of their career change unfolded naturally afterward.

Our perception of time is often linear, but the universe operates in a much more complex, interconnected way. Just as the pieces of a puzzle reveal a full picture only when everything is in its place, our desires often manifest when multiple unseen factors align.

Recognizing the Larger Patterns

From my experience, the timing of things can also be seen as part of larger cycles. I’ve had clients who experienced a major life transition, such as a move or a change in relationship statues, only to find themselves revisiting similar themes from years ago, but from a more evolved perspective. These cycles can feel frustrating, like reiterations of old struggles. However, they often present new opportunities for growth and healing.

What I keep noticing is that our desires and goals don’t exist in isolation. They interact with the lives of others, with the collective unfolding of events in ways we couldn't predict. They remind me of weaving a tapestry, each thread vital to forming the complete image though not immediately visible. Our anticipated timing is just one thread among many.

In the end, patience isn't so much about waiting, it’s about being open to what unfolds. Accepting that things might not go according to plan is not about giving up on dreams. Instead, it's about learning to embrace and trust the rhythms of life that we may not fully understand but are indeed working toward unveiling something meaningful.
